A Berkey water filter can be used to filter out contaminants in both normal and hostile filtration environments. This includes treated and untreated water from lakes, streams, ponds, stagnant water sources, and water sources in foreign countries with less strict standards. In fact, Berkey water filters are capable of removing food coloring from a water sample and keeping all minerals and nutritional elements still intact.

Berkey has several water filtration systems. The Berkey Light water filter, for example, can go through four gallons of water per hour. Big Berkey filters, similarly, can purify 3.5 gallons per hour and contain two Black Berkey water filters. These filters can purify up to 6000 gallons, and most purification systems contain one to two Black Berkey water filters. Additionally, these filters can be purchased separately and added to your filtration system. Fluoride filters, which remove fluoride and arsenic from water, can be used in combination with a Black Berkey.
